"Love is true love when there are no strings attached."
(Happy Musings is a newspaper feature syndicated by King Features that I create each day to remind us all that “Life is wonderful!” I offer it here to brighten your day. Please share it with your friends.)
This is certainly true. However, I’ve never liked the words “unconditional love”. I always have to decipher it. It sounds so clinical. I prefer the idea of and the expression “no strings attached”. Now that’s love – giving without asking or expecting anything in return. Alas, unconditional love!
I have thought for many years that we are love and when we give our focus to something or someone we are giving our love, ourselves to it. We are uniting with it or that person.
Take tennis. I love tennis. I love to play competitive tennis without competing. What I have found in my long history of playing tennis is that most tennis players are looking to take, on a tennis court. They give certainly – effort and expertise, but they want something in return. They want the point, the game or the match. I found it far more enjoyable and effective to play for the fun of it. That does not exclude participating in competitive events and even winning. It is just that the winning comes to you as a result of your giving. It’s giving, not grabbing.
Now I have taken this into my art. I paint for my gallery and design for various products and I also do a feature for newspapers. But the only way I can do this effectively is to love what I do and not be concerned with the results, the pay-off.
Just as in tennis, I believe the canvas and the subject matter know if I am using them or loving them. In tennis the ball knows for sure if my attention is on it or what I might want to get from it. The idea is not to split your attention, your love. Let is go out without any strings. The bounce back always comes. Even if there were no return on your love, you get the pleasure of loving in the first place. This is freedom – giving or loving with no strings attached!
Smiles,
Sally
