Everywhere you look you can find something beautiful.
I walk to work each morning from a little cottage 8 blocks from my gallery. Along the way I get to see the most beautiful roses. I smell the roses, admire their colors and thoroughly appreciate them. I don’t know if anyone else smells these flowers or notices them except as a blur when they drive by. But I do and I know the flowers appreciate the attention. Why else are they here but to be beautiful.
Sometimes when I walk home I walk along a path on the side of a hillside that borders the ocean. The view is magnificent, especially at twilight. Pelicans sit below on white rocky outcroppings from the hill. They are equally magnificent as await the falling sun. It is peaceful except for the sounds of the seagulls hurrying to the beach nearby. They line up to honor the setting sun as well.
I am lucky to have so much beauty around me. I hope you have beauty in your life too.
Smiles,
Sally

"New friends are as good as old friends when they are true friends."
(Happy Musings is a newspaper feature syndicated by King Features that I create each day to remind us all that “Life is wonderful!” I offer it here to brighten your day. Please share it with your friends.)
New friends are as good as old friends when they are true friends. I love friends. Once a friend, always a friend with me. I look for new friends wherever I am. Somehow I got the idea when I was very young that people were just friends in waiting and that most people were hesitant to start the friendship. But if I started it first, they were very willing to be friendly. And, of course, of all the people you can be friendly with during a day, there is usually one who could be a friend for more than a day.
Just yesterday the loveliest woman stood outside my gallery perusing one of the paintings in the window. She had beautiful, thick white hair – the kind really healthy people have. And she wore a periwinkle sweater set which, of course, looked sensational with her hair. I made a remark about the color of her periwinkle tops and she chatted herself into the gallery. We spoke of many things – the fact that she lived in Arizona and was a widow and had just been to a family gathering for her birthday. She wanted gifts for her children who had attended the event. She picked out a colorful print of the La Jolla Cove. I personalized one for each. We continued to chat as I framed the prints -- and I found that we had friends in common, I knew exactly where she lived in Scottsdale, and that she was also a tennis player.
I was short one piece of glass to finish her order, but promised to send it to her. Off she went, then a moment later I found that piece of glass and caught up with her. No rush, she said as she was having lunch next door. When she returned to pick up her piece of art, she brought me lunch.
I have a new, true friend.
Smiles,
Sally

"Life is about sowing. Reaping is only that you have more to sow with."
(Happy Musings is a newspaper feature syndicated by King Features that I create each day to remind us all that “Life is wonderful!” I offer it here to brighten your day. Please share it with your friends.)
We are always sowing – planting, planting, whether it’s with thoughts, words or deeds. Especially at this time when there seems to be great shifts in people’s lives, people are sowing. Circumstances have changed for many, so efforts are now being made in new directions, new plantings.
Yep, we all have our little gardens that need tending. And when we have reaped the harvest, we can share again by sowing in other ways.
My small gallery in La Jolla is constantly evolving. We change the emphasis from large, fine art pieces of art to Oriental pieces to the small gift pieces. It all depends on what the customers are looking for. And if no one is looking at the moment, I teach. We are flexible here and try new things. We spread good feeling in all of it.
Today a South African woman came in. She had been attracted by a Tibetan Buddha painting in the window. She was not interested in the Buddha she said because she was a Christian, but she was interested in the other Chinese paintings. She said she came in because of the feeling. That’s the thing we have to keep in mind when sowing – the feeling. If it’s something new we try, make sure we love it. If it’s something we already do, make sure we do it with love. That’s the best kind of sowing and then you know you will be reaping the same.
Smiles,
Sally

"Food for thought tastes good to the heart."
(Happy Musings is a newspaper feature syndicated by King Features that I create each day to remind us all that “Life is wonderful!” I offer it here to brighten your day. Please share it with your friends.)
Food for Thought is such a thoughtful thought. There are so many thoughts that we run into each day, but a worthwhile thought does taste good to the heart.
As things have been slowing down in the village of La Jolla where I live, it is easy for a person to get discouraged if one is in business. I was just preparing some papers as support for a little video I will be doing on my Happy Musings tomorrow when my eyes came across one of the Musings. It was about hope and how helpful hope is. I must have needed to read it or it wouldn’t have popped out at me. It mentioned that the value of hope is immeasurable and that a positive, hopeful person is unstoppable. It felt good to my heart.
Oftentimes a thought will jump out at me from words on a sign, from words on a bumper sticker, from words from a friend. They seem to be messages just meant for me at that particular time. And they are heart-warming. I don’t look for them outwardly, but I’m sure I call for them inwardly. I’m sure this happens to you too.
That which tastes good to the heart should be paid attention to.
Smiles,
Sally

"Little thoughts of self-appreciation make a big difference to oneself."
(Happy Musings is a newspaper feature syndicated by King Features that I create each day to remind us all that “Life is wonderful!” I offer it here to brighten your day. Please share it with your friends.)
Oh, the jabs we take and the little jabs we make toward ourselves. Can’t do it. Not allowed.
Little thoughts of self-appreciation are so gratefully welcomed and dearly needed. Yet we tend to overlook ourselves and our own efforts. It is easier to compliment and appreciate others. Yet, we try so hard in so many areas, it wouldn’t hurt to think or say something really nice to ourselves. A little kindness goes along ways, even when it doesn’t leave its source.
I often observe self-appreciation or the lack of it on a tennis court. A tennis court is a neutral field where attitudes and inner belief systems of the players show up easily. I was playing doubles with a fellow yesterday who was so hard on himself that he continued to get worse as the match went on. Every missed shot was analyzed and criticized. People like this man are unaware that everything is aware. The consciousness that is his body was taking terrible verbal abuse and withdrawing as the match moved along. Besides, I believe, people like this disturb the harmony that exists everywhere, including a tennis court.
When my son finishes a project, large or small, he smiles and says out loud to himself, “Good job, Mike!” I love that about him. He strives to be upbeat and never misses a chance to uplift another.
We all need to be appreciated. We can do it for ourselves. If someone else adds to that, all the better.
Smiles,
Sally

"Along every path beautiful experiences are gathered."
(Happy Musings is a newspaper feature syndicated by King Features that I create each day to remind us all that “Life is wonderful!” I offer it here to brighten your day. Please share it with your friends.)
We’re all on this great path of life, but each one’s path is different. We get to experience exactly what we need to and get to enjoy it all. I look for beautiful experiences continually. They are sometimes in the form of meeting old friends or the making of new ones. Because I live near the ocean, sometimes those experiences are being in the presence of the setting sun or the rising sun at the beach. I know the seagulls enjoy both the rising and the setting sun. I see them as I walk the beach in the mornings and at dusk.
My path has taken me to all sorts of places, especially when I traveled as a professional tennis player -- to England, France, Ireland, Italy, the Caribbean, Japan and Mexico. In each place I met wonderful people and had beautiful experiences. Watching the full moon rise over Venice, lunching in a vineyard on the island of Torcello, awaiting the arrival of yachts over the turquoise waters of Montego Bay with pink skies overhead, dancing till dawn in San Juan, shopping for fruit in the rain in London, watching the big, fluffy snowflakes waffle through the morning air after giving birth to my son in Aspen – these are just a few of my treasured experiences. Everyone has them.
Long ago I thought I would go through life gathering them, so that when I was very old I would have much to remember. Surprisingly I find I have little time to reflect, but am more interested in gathering.
I wish for you many beautiful experiences.
Smiles,
Sally
